Larry's 1st annual Cowboy Collectors Gathering Show took place in this old rock building. The "Freeman" building at Frontier Days Rodeo Grounds.
Larry Howard, an esteemed cowboy collector and trusted companion, was the original promoter of The Cowboy Collectors Gathering event. Larry had a great eye for the rarest cowboy antique items & he had a unique ability to find the most extraordinary pieces in his hunt. While collecting, Larry built a fabulous well admired cowboy collection. Larry was extremely passionate about collecting items connected to cowboy life and its fascinating history. Larry decided that his hometown - Prescott, AZ - would be the perfect place to have a western collectible show. Afterall, Prescott and its surrounding area are rich in western history!
The Cowboy Collectors Gathering event began in 2006 at Prescott's Frontier Days Rodeo Grounds, where Larry and a small group of collectors met to trade western antiques. A few years later, CCG expanded to include over 100 traders specializing in cowboy collectibles from various countries. Since 2006, collectors and traders have met in one location to buy, sell, and trade top quality Western and Native Americana antiques and collectibles. Fourteen years later, CCG simply outgrew Frontier rodeo grounds facility then, moved to Prescott Valley, AZ where Findlay Toyota Center became the new home for the CCG event in 2020.
FOR THOSE WHO ASK... "WHY IS CCG EVENT ON "WEDNESDAY?":
The first "Cowboy Collectors Gathering" event took place on the 3rd "Wednesday" Jan 2006. Why Wednesday? Larry thought "What if CCG were to precede another western show held in Mesa, AZ on the 3rd weekend in January?". Why? Because his fellow western collectors & exhibitors could enjoy & prosper at two events (back-to-back). Larry's thoughts orchestrated CCG's event to begin the 3rd "Wednesday" in January 2006. Without doubt, an event held "mid-week" seems odd! Nonetheless, the CCG event has prospered and is quite successful on a "Wednesday"! Fast forward, The CCG event has blossomed! Its growth is a blessing to the western collectible industry. Growth has continued with great interest as its attendees & its exhibitors have increased significantly, year after year.
And there you have it! With great intension, CCG intentionally schedules their annual event on the 3rd "Wednesday" in January (for 20 years!) because a mid-week event, oddly works. Who knew a one-horse town event held on the 3rd Wednesday in Jan 2006 would attract an attendee who clearly chose to call-in sick at work to attend the event would experience something so exceptional that others would also need to call-in sick to work each annual 3rd Wednesday in January! P.S. Your secret's safe with us! :o)
Sadly, our great friend Larry Howard passed in 2016. Larry's expertise in collectibles remains well regarded, and both his friends and those who enjoyed buying, selling, and trading western collectibles with him miss his friendship deeply.
